man dies in sports car smash that left road 'littered with bodies'
The 25-year-old victim was in an Audi A5 Sport which crashed with an Audi A6 S in the early hours of Sunday morning A man has died and four others were hurt after two high powered sports cars crashed in what may have been a race.
The 25-year-old victim
was driving a grey Audi A5 Sport when it crashed with a white Audi A6 S
line in Bury Road, Rochdale, just before 4.40am on Sunday.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, the Manchester Evening News reports.
It is understood one line of inquiry being investigated by police is whether the cars were racing.
Four men aged 18 to 21,
who were in the Audi A6, were taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital with
injuries including a dislocated ankle.
Witnesses said the
street was ‘littered’ with bodies following the crash and told how one
man who was found collapsed in the street was later seen lying in the
back of a taxi.
Officers found the two
smashed-up sports cars at the scene, outside a pub near the junction
with Sandy Lane. A garden fence and a green telecom box were also
damaged.
One eye-witness said:
“There was a massive bang. I went to the window and saw there had been a
crash. There were bodies everywhere.”
Police set up a large
cordon around the scene. Debris was strewn across the road. The front
half of the A5 was around 30ft from the rear half, which could be seen
around the corner in Sandy Lane. The front of the A6 was also destroyed.
A taxi was seen inside the police cordon. Officers want to speak to two men who were seen in the back of the taxi.
Sgt Mark Thomas, from
GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts and
sympathies are with the family of this man at this tragic time, and we
have specially trained officers supporting them.
